Ivan Jevtic Spec.dr.vet. President of the Association for Small Animal Endoscopy and Endosurgery (ASAEE)

Reduced activities, low mood and lack of desire to play are acute indicators of changes in the health of pets. The problem is usually and quickly solved with one examination by a veterinary surgeon and appropriate therapy. However,  severe and dangerous pathological conditions can occur in animals, just like in human medicine, which can only be treated with surgery.

To establish an accurate diagnosis in the IVAVET clinic, the following is performed in the  dependence on the symptoms of the disease:

– General clinical examination (auscultation of the heart and lungs, palpation of lymph nodes, measurement of body temperature ..)
– Biochemical and haematological blood tests
– Ultrasound examination
– X-ray examination
– Endoscopic diagnostics (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, rhinoscopy, otoscopy, cystoscopy, vaginoscopy and laparoscopic exploration)

Veterinary Clinic IVAVET is one of the few in the region where the most complex health conditions are solving, by the application of minimally invasive surgery in pets. Here, all interventions on pets are performed with most modern technique using an endoscope, like the few clinics in the world of this profile.

In practice, the most common and routine interventions are laparoscopic sterilization of dogs and cats, as well as the removal of a foreign body from the nose, ear, oesophagus and stomach, non-operatively under general inhalation anaesthesia. Among the more demanding procedures are removal of the gallbladder, surgery of the adrenal gland, removal of the kidney, removal of a part of the liver, surgery of the bladder, removal of various types of tumours, etc.

Clinic “IVAVET” has the most modern equipment for performing endoscopic procedures. As in human medicine, minimally invasive endoscopic technique is the gold standard of surgery in animals. The application of this technique (endoscopy) is based on the use of natural openings, which enables complete protection of the surrounding tissue of pets. Without pain, without wearing a protective collar, with 1 day of postoperative recovery. Doggy can walk and run in the park the next day already.

World trends require minimal invasiveness of surgery. If endoscopic-laparoscopic) surgery can be performed on one opening, the other should not be opened. The fewer openings (ports) – the less trauma to the surrounding tissue and the faster the recovery period.

The vet clinic “IVAVET” states that the classic-open surgery in the abdominal region, which was applied to pets in previous years, has been replaced by minimally invasive surgery. After the classic surgical technique in pets, the abdominal organs fall on the wound due to the natural position of the body and adhesions can appear in the abdomen. Therefore, interventions in the abdominal region in dogs and cats are considered to be the greatest benefit in the application of minimally invasive surgery. The effects are multiple: the wound is minimal, there is no swelling, no adhesions and pain.

Also, due to the large differences in body weight, within only one species, the application of endoscopic  surgery in pets is significantly more complex than the application in the human population.

Compared to classical-open surgery, the advantages of minimally invasive endoscopic surgery are multiple:
Lower trauma to surrounding tissue
No pain
No protective E-collar wearing
Recovery for 1 day
No anxiety-the doggy is calm, in a good mood, the next day he/she walks and runs around the park

It is noted that the differences in body weight in pets, doggies, for example, can be ranged up to 50 kg. The lower the bodyweight, the more complex the procedure is, as a rule. In small pet patients, such procedures enter the domain of microsurgery. They require great surgeon’s skill, exceptional precision and great previous experience in classical-open surgery.

In the “IVAVET” clinic, interventions are performed with the most modern endoscopes with a diameter of 1 to 12 millimetres, which enables access to natural openings of various dimensions, depending on the bodyweight of the pet. The practise uses the most modern equipment and devices of renowned world brands – “Karl Storz”, “Medtronic”, “Fujinon”…

Owners from all over Serbia, Republika Srpska, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Croatia, and other EU countries bring their pets to the “IVAVET” clinic.

Classic open surgery in the abdominal region, which was used in previous years, has been replaced by minimally invasive surgery in pets. After the operation, due to their natural position (because the abdominal organs rest on the wall of the peritoneum), adhesions usually form in that part, which creates a feeling of discomfort and pain.  The greatest benefit of minimally invasive surgery is in the interventions of the abdominal region, in dogs and cats. The effects are minimal wound, no swelling, no adhesions and pain.

More than 10,000 interventions have been performed here in its two decades of existence, hundreds of them are the most complex. About 500 endoscopic procedures are performed annually.

The founders of the clinic are Biljana Jevtić and Ivan Jevtić DVM.Dr Ivan Jevtić graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade, and then he worked as an assistant at the Department of Biology. He later opted for private practice, and with professional training in the country and abroad, gained the reputation of one of the greatest experts in Southeast Europe in minimally invasive surgery. Together with his colleagues from Croatia, he founded the Association for Small Animal Endoscopy and Endosurgery (ASAEE) with its headquarters in Belgrade and a representative office in Šibenik (in the Republic of Croatia). With colleagues from Croatia, Dr Marina Barižon, who is a representative of the Association for Croatia, and Dr Emil Ofner, he organized a conference in 2017 in Belgrade, and in 2018 in Šibenik. As the president of ASAEE, Dr Ivan Jevtić participates in the organization of the First European Congress, which will be held in October 2020 in Barcelona. Also, participation in the organization of the First World Congress for Endoscopy and Endosurgery of Small Animals, which will be held in 2021 in Fort Coins, USA, is planned. The members of the ASAEE association are veterinary experts from many countries: USA, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Russia, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Slovenia, Slovakia, Britain, Lithuania and Belgium.

Following the strategy ONE MEDICINE – ONE HEALTH, Ivan Jevtić DVM participates in congresses organized by endoscopic surgeons of human medicine. These surgeons also participate in congresses of veterinary experts, organized by Dr Ivan Jevtić.

In addition to the Association for Small Animal Endoscopy and Endosurgery (ASAEE) – the founder and member of which is he, Dr Ivan Jevtić is a member of the Veterinary and Endoscopic Society (VES) in the USA, then the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES).  He is a member of the MINIMAL association (Iberian Association for Minimally Invasive Surgery – Spain and Portugal,as well as Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Serbia (UEHS), (human endoscopic surgeons of Serbia)

During the past years, Dr Ivan Jevtić has achieved close cooperation with his colleagues in human endoscopic surgery, participating with them at congresses. He has participated as a lecturer in Lithuania, Valencia, Seville, Rome, Lisbon, Šibenik and Belgrade.

Vet clinic “IVAVET” is located in the city centre, in a quiet street in Vračar (Belgrade) and is easily accessible from several directions. Communication is in English.
