For the first time ever a Serbian-Nordic Mining Academy was arranged on 10 March at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Economy in Belgrade, by Business Sweden in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden in Belgrade, the Ministry for Energy and Mining of the Republic of Serbia, Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Finpro.

The conference was called “Super Mines” and targeted leading technology experts, mining companies, academia and authorities.

The outspoken ambition of the “Super Mines” conference is to become a recurring forum for exchange of best practices within mining strategy, policy and technology. This year special attention was directed towards the topic: “How to achieve high productivity, safety and profitability simultaneously in the mining sector.” In combination with a newly adopted Serbian law on mining, inspired by the legislation in the Nordic countries, this creates great possibilities for Serbia do develop its mining sector, which already has a proud tradition and great potential.

Some of the points addressed during the day were: mining technologies and the mining laws in Sweden and Serbia, how private-public partnerships can increase efficiency and productivity and how Nordic and Central European mining experts already cooperate to create world class mines. Alongside, there were interactive B2B elements where Nordic and Serbian experts and companies exchanged hands-on experiences, on both top challenges and solutions within safety, productivity and logistics in mines.

One of the most distinguished participants, Stefan Noréen, Ambassador and Senior Adviser to the Minister for Enterprise and Innovation in Sweden stated that Sweden and Serbia enjoy very good and extensive bilateral relations.

Ambassador Noréen also stated that one of the main purpose of the “Super Mines” conference was to present the Nordic perspective on efficient and sustainable mining.

“We will do that by providing both a regulatory, company as well as an academic perspective.”
