Focus on Climate – Will something change after Amazon?

In August, tens of thousands of fires were recorded across the Amazon rainforest, with dramatic images and statistics reported daily across the world’s media. Both the scale of the fires and the erratic response from the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro have garnered attention, with politicians, newspapers and commentators all weighing in on how events were playing out. The media highlighted various factors that could have worsened this year’s Amazon fires, including climate change, deforestation, meat consumption… Climate change can exacerbate wildfires by rising temperatures and increasing the chances of drought. Both of these factors can create “tinderbox” conditions, meaning that – once ignited – a fire can spread very quickly over large areas of land. Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, spanning an area that is 25 times the size of the UK. The forest currently accounts for around a quarter of the CO2 removal service provided by the world’s forests..
Kruševac wins European Mobility Week Award 2019
Kruševac (Serbia) is the winner of the European Mobility Week Award 2019 for larger municipalities, with Karditsa (Greece) taking home the award for smaller municipalities. The remaining two sustainable mobility awards, announced by the European Commission, went to Brussels Capital Region (Belgium) – 8th SUMP Award and to Pontevedra (Spain) – 1st EU Urban Road Safety Award.
The European Mobility Week (EMW) 2019 has proven a great success for the western Balkan countries, among other, it increased the awareness on sustainable urban mobility in smaller and larger municipalities across the region.
Overall, four urban areas in the Balkan countries – Rethymno and Karditsa from Greece, Kruševac and Turkey’s Ordu were among 12 European Mobility Week finalists.

The organisers of this year’s conference are: Heror Media Pont, Mađar so, Storyteller, Hrvatska riječ, the Centre for the Development of Minority and Local Media, the Media Association in cooperation with FUEN and ECMI with the support of MIDAS.
