In preparation for the 2025 budget, the Green Budget Tagging (GBT) Working Group led by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Serbia has assessed a selection of “light tagged” green projects.

In this inaugural year of GBT, the focus for line ministries has been to identify and tag projects with a positive environmental impact as ‘green projects.’ This effort follows the Green Budget Tagging Methodology and the Roadmap for the Introduction of GBT in the Republic of Serbia, both of which were developed last year. The methodology outlines the operational steps for implementing GBT, while the Roadmap provides essential guidance on GBT objectives and sets out the framework for aligning Serbia’s approach with the EU Green Budgeting Reference Framework.

The GBT Working Group, composed of representatives from line ministries and relevant public institutions, convened at the Ministry of Finance to review submitted green projects and draft the outline of the GBT report that will accompany the Budget Law. In addition to reviewing over 70 projects, the group identified opportunities to align GBT with Serbia’s strategic documents as well as with the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. This alignment strengthens synergies and coherence in Serbia’s efforts to advance on settled climate and environment goals on global, EU and national level.

This activity was supported by the governments of Germany and Switzerland within the “Public Finance Reform – 2030 Agenda” project.
