The German Development Cooperation implemented by GIZ delivered electric bicycles to 16 towns and municipalities, to support social care workers at a time when the number of Covid-19 cases is rising again. They will be distributed to caregivers providing home assistance services to the elderly and other persons in need of care, who greatly rely on this type of support because of movement restrictions and increased health risk.

The donation was awarded by the German-Serbian Development Cooperation project “Social Services for Vulnerable Groups”. In addition to the bicycles, it also includes helmets and safety locks. The e-bikes are battery-powered but can also be ridden without the power on.

“Home assistance for the elderly is one of the social services in highest demand. We are very pleased this donation will support the employees in social protection, making it easier for them to reach their beneficiaries, and is also environmentally friendly. The fact that the bicycles are produced locally, in Serbia, is an additional benefit, as we are also supporting the development of the local green economy”, stated Markus Maier, the project team leader.

In 2020, a total of 58 e-bicycles were delivered, of which 26 are suited to mountainous terrains and 32 to flat terrains.
