The forthcoming 20th of May will not be a usual School’s Day for students of Sestre Ilic school in Valjevo. Under the name “First encounter with Norway”, they will, for the first time, devote this day to Norway.

Goran Bojicic, school principal, has revealed us some of the programme. It seems that Norway will be everywhere: on billboards in the main hall, on photos, video presentations and on the kitchen table. In addition to this, instead of some boring lectures, there will be screenings of a movie about Norway on their history, geography and English language classes.

On the other hand, junior students will have a little surprise contest on the topic “Viking ship and the Vikings”.

In order to keep something Norwegian for their parents, Bojicic says that Norwegian movies will be afterwards given to the Valjevo Cultural Center for screening.

According to him, the idea to devote such a day to Norway comes from their admiration of Norway and its education system and social care. It also comes from the Norwegian generous support to Valjevo and Serbia in general throughout the years.

“Our district of Valjevo has kept memories of the Second World War, when a large number of internees was sent to the German concentration camps in Norway. Also, recent donations to the medical center were invaluable for the town of Valjevo,” says Bojicic.

His school was also part of the project entitled ”Fight against addictions” supported by Norwegian embassy.

Bojicic hopes to continue this tradition now and have the coming School’s Days devoted to Norway as well, but from a different angle. “We would change the topic every year and try to learn about Norway from the aspect of history, culture, sports, nature and the like,” concludes Bojicic.
