Bans on Russian athletes are ripping out a huge piece of...
When was the last time a Western athlete was banned because their country started a war?

One of the unspoken rules of human affairs is that ordinary citizens should never be personally harassed for the political actions of their leaders. That truism has never been properly observed enough, and went completely out of the window when Russia began its military operation in Ukraine.
This week, Serbian tennis sensation Novak Djokovic delivered a powerful rebuke to Wimbledon’s decision to bar the participation of Russian players from the famous grass tournament.
Referring to himself as a “child of war” who experienced the “emotional trauma” of the US-led 78-day NATO bombardment of his native town of Belgrade in 1999, Djokovic described the banning of Russian pl..

The head of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has suggested he would welcome a ban on Russian players at the upcoming Rome Masters tennis tournament.
Following Wimbledon’s lead, after the English Grand Slam announced a ban on Russian players last week which was widely-criticized by figures such as world number one Novak Djokovic, it appears that Italy’s biggest tennis tournament could introduce similar measures as part of plans reportedly being spearheaded by Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Despite previously stating that Russian athletes, punished as part of International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended sanctions as a reaction to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, are “clearly” the “victims of this situation”, CONI president Giovanni Malago seems to be bowing to political pressure as indicated in comments published by Corriere della Sera on M..
Let’s pray the ‘Cold War’ between America and Russia doesn’t turn...
The Cold War, a term coined 75 years ago, is still here – and it’s better than what seems to be the only alternative
In April 1947, the term ‘Cold War’ was uttered for the first time to describe the geopolitical rift between the US and the Soviet Union.
The confrontation supposedly ended with the fall of the USSR. But did the cessation of tensions happen only in our imagination?
While Washington and Moscow made invincible allies in the battle against Nazi Germany, the two ideological foes could no longer conceal their mutual enmity when World War II came to a close in 1945. Then, a severe chill swept the planet for nearly half a century that many feared would end in nuclear disaster.
Seventy-five years ago this month, Bertrand Baruch, the American financier and statesman, coined the term ‘Cold War’ to describe this protracted standoff. Speaking before a delegation of US lawmakers, Baruch, foreshadowing the Red Scare of the McCarthy years, told his audience: “Let us not be deceived,..

Major Russian music competition targeted over Ukraine
The Geneva-based World Federation of International Music Competitions has expelled a major Russian contest from its ranks over the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. The decision targeting the Russian International Tchaikovsky Competition was taken last week and made public on Wednesday.
The Federation sent rather mixed signals explaining the reasoning behind the move, simultaneously reiterating its purported “apolitical” stance, kicking off the Russia-based contest from its ranks and outlining support of “Ukrainian artists” as its goal.

“Many laureates of the Tchaikovsky Competition are among the leading artists of today. However, in the face of Russia ́s brutal war and humanitarian atrocities in Ukraine, the WFIMC as an apolitical organization cannot support or have as a member, a competition financed and used as a promotional tool by the Russian regime,” the Federation said in a statement, adding that it “affirms its previous stateme..
Madeleine Albright: America’s Ribbentrop
In May of 1996, Lesley Stahl, of 60 Minutes, asked the future Secretary of State Madeleine Albright about the humanitarian disaster in Iraq, which was caused by U.S.-led sanctions. “We have heard that a half a million children have died,” Stahl said. “I mean that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And—you know, is the price worth it?” Albright, who died on March 23 of this year and who was, at the time of the 60 Minutes interview, President Bill Clinton’s ambassador to the United Nations, replied with barely any hesitation: “I think this is a very hard choice, but the price—we think the price is worth it.”
It is vulgar to deploy reductio ad Hitlerum to villify one’s political and ideological opponents. In the case of Madeleine Albright, however, the National Socialist mindset and temperament are so conspicuous that describing her as “America’s Ribbentrop” is not a term of abuse. It is an empirically justified reference to who she was and what she had done.
