Football diplomacy and youth empowerment
With the FIFA World Cup on top of the agenda, Qatar envisions a path forward, based on fully believing in the great potential of football diplomacy as an instrument of peacemaking and moderation
Across the world, more and more state and non-state actors have begun to recognize and capitalize on the potential of public diplomacy, as opposed to traditional diplomacy. The latter, which centers on the state and traditional tools of diplomacy often lack the grassroots perspective of the general citizenry and youth in particular.
Through public diplomacy, nonstate actors, more specifically concerned citizens, are given the opportunity to not only voice their concerns, but to have a role in decision-making as well. Football diplomacy, therefore, is an example of how soft power in today’s world has the potential to address increasing global inequalities, environmental and other socio-economic challenges.
The growing position of sports in politics is particularly significant because it not o..
Umstrittene Äußerungen von Andrij Melnyk: Was darf Diplomatie?
Paul Widmer: Ja, ganz sicher.
71 years of RFE/RL: How the CIA-founded American state run media...
Originally established as an anti-Bolshevik endeavor, RFE/RL has thrived as US-Russia relations have nose-dived
The first of May marks the 51st anniversary of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (hereinafter “RFE/RL”, although this didn’t become the official name until 1976) – radio stations which broadcast into Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, respectively. As detailed in an internal CIA document from 1951 titled “Radio Aims and Objectives,” RFE/RL was to be operated by refugees or exiles from the various Socialist Bloc countries to broadcast information intended to encourage “hatred against the regime(s)” and to increase the “will to resist the regime(s).” In other words, this project had an explicit function to remove governments unfavorable to Washington.
Undoubtedly, May 1 was chosen as the launch of this project as it coincided with International Workers’ Day, one of the most important holidays in the Socialist Bloc.
From its inception until 1972, it was the CIA which funded R..
Russian orchestra protests ‘balalaika ban’ (VIDEO)
Musicians played songs by pop group ABBA on balalaikas in front of Sweden’s consulate in St. Petersburg
A Russian youth national-instruments orchestra staged an improvised “protest concert” in front of the Swedish consulate in St. Petersburg on Monday. This comes after Swedish authorities earlier banned a musical performance in Sweden over the inclusion of balalaikas.
The instruments, branded “a symbol of Russia,” had been deemed offensive by some locals amid Moscow’s ongoing military offensive in Ukraine. The balalaikas were set to be played during a charity performance to support Ukraine by ‘Soedra Bergens Balalaikor’, a local folk band in the Swedish city of Uppsala.
In protest, the musicians from the Russian ‘Terema’ orchestra played several songs by Swedish pop group ABBA, including “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” on traditional Russian folk instruments outside the consulate.
“We have found it a little offensive,” the orchestra’s conductor, Andrey Dolgov, told Russi..
